WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

As Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), defines it:  “Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.”

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing full attention to the present moment with openness and non-judgment. It involves becoming more aware of thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations as they arise, gaining a greater self awareness, allowing for greater clarity, calm, balance, empowerment and intentionality in daily life. Rooted in both ancient wisdom and modern science, mindfulness is widely used to work to reduce stress, improve focus, and support overall well-being.

"And men go abroad to admire the heights of mountains, the mighty waves of the sea, the broad tides of rivers, the compass of the ocean, and the circuits of the stars, yet pass over the mystery of themselves without a thought."  Saint Augustine

“Within my body are all the sacred places of the world, and the most profound pilgrimage I can ever make is within my own body.” Saraha

WHY MINDFULNESS?

Mindfulness is a scientifically researched, evidence-based practice that helps reduce stress, improve focus, and better manage challenges. By cultivating present-moment awareness, it strengthens emotional regulation, decision-making, and overall well-being. Research also shows mindfulness fosters joy and contentment, helping individuals experience greater satisfaction and balance in daily life. Backed by extensive studies, mindfulness is an effective tool for building clarity, resilience, and lasting happiness.

It’s about appreciating what’s already here, and with courage really showing up for yourself. Mindfulness practice isn’t just for stress reduction, it’s a profound journey towards understanding yourself and the world around, and joyfully creating, embracing and living a life filled with awareness, connection, love and presence.

“How did the rose ever open its heart and give this world all its beauty? It felt the encouragement of light against its being. Otherwise we all remain too frightened.”  Hafiz

MINDFULNESS: WHAT IT'S NOT

  • Not about stopping thoughts
It’s about noticing thoughts without getting caught in them.
  • Not the same as relaxation
Calm may arise, but the goal is awareness, not necessarily relaxation.
  • Not a religious practice
While rooted in ancient contemplative traditions, it’s widely practiced in secular settings.
  • Not positive thinking
Mindfulness allows space for all thoughts and emotions, not just pleasant ones.
  • Not a quick fix
It's a skill that develops over time through consistent practice.
  • Not zoning out or escaping
Mindfulness is about tuning in to the present moment, not disconnecting from it.
  • Not always comfortable
Facing inner experiences can be challenging, especially at first.
  • Not a replacement for therapy
It can support mental health, but it's not a substitute for professional care.

MINDFULNESS: HELPFUL TO KNOW

  • May bring up difficult emotions
Becoming more self aware can surface unresolved feelings or memories.
  • Not a quick fix
Benefits often come with consistent, long-term practice.
  • Requires patience and self-compassion
Progress may be slow and non-linear.
  • Not always suitable for unmanaged trauma
Those with a history of trauma or certain mental health conditions should consult a mental health professional before beginning.
  • Discomfort with stillness is normal
Sitting with silence or bodily sensations can be challenging, especially at first.
  • Does not replace clinical care
Mindfulness supports well-being but is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment.
  • Can complement mental health care
Mindfulness can enhance therapeutic outcomes and support emotional healing.
